The CAS Navy was split off from the UCAS Navy when the Confederation of American States itself was formed in 2034.

The Confederation Navy is smaller but more focused on the UCAS Navy, focusing on patrolling and protecting its water rather than power projection outside of its borders. The navy employs a few heavy warships but consists mostly of frigates, corvettes, and patrol craft backed up by a very large Submarine fleet.[1]

Submarines[]

The CAS has the largest submarine force in the world, both in terms of conventional attack subs and missile subs (both conventional and nuclear warheads). When they seceded they took most of the UCAS’s nuclear missile subs, leaving the UCAS only land-based silos and bombers. The CAS missile subs were mothballed in 2048 under a détente policy, but were returned to service in 2056 after the nuclear bomb was detonated in Chicago.[2]

Circa 2060, the CAS Navy developed the SSVN, submarines capable of launching manned and unmanned combat aircraft. Rumored to have a displacement of almost 35,000 tons and carry a wing of six fighter aircraft. At the time, no other navy in the world had anything like it.[3]

CSS Hunley – Lead ship of her class of fusion submarines.[4]

CSS Vicksburg [5]

CSS Virginia II – A Hunley-class fusion submarine. Circa 2071 she spent a year assigned to the UCAS Everett Naval Shipyard for a set of wargames.[6]

CSS Savannah – The lead ship of her patrol sub class. While the design uses an economical diesel/electric engine, electrolytic oxygen generators extend its mission durations.[7]

Aircraft carriers[]

In addition to the SSVNs, the CAS navy has two 50,000-ton carriers, allowing for limited offshore air operations.[8]

These carriers are less than half the tonnage of the supercarriers operated by the UCAS Navy, the Imperial Japanese Navy, and Saeder-Krupp.[9]

Other ships[]

CSS Defiant – A destroyer operating from New Orleans.[10]

CSS Merrimac – The lead ship of her missile-cruiser class.[11] CSS Stuart – The lead ship of her corvette class.[12][13]

Facilities[]

Charleston, South Carolina – Home port to one of the two carrier groups.[14]

Mobile, Alabama – One of two primary CAS naval bases, and home port to the other carrier group.[15]

Pensacola, Florida – One of two primary CAS naval bases, and home to most of the largely land-based naval air support.[16]

Comments[]

The original CSS Hunley was, in 1864, the first submarine in the world to sink an enemy vessel.

Under the Navy's hull classification system SSVN means self-propelled submarine (SS), carrying aircraft (V, from the French verb voler, for "to fly"), and nuclear powered (N).
