I also wanted to add that I realize the MediaWiki stuff linked to has a lot of the general things, but I figured our own tutorial could eventually be expanded to include guidelines and usages that are unique to SixthWorld Wiki. Obviously it's a work in progress, but as the site grows being able to address style guidelines and other issues in our own tutorial will probably helpful down the line at some point.
--Connor 20:23, 11 Sep 2004 (Eastern Daylight Time)

Something about style guidelines would be good. I've just been winging it, and until recently I was the only one really doing much editing, so it's pretty arbitrary.

You can use two dashes followed by four tildes to create a time/date stamp and signature. Very handy for these discussions!

Culture Categories[]

As I've been contributing JIS information from the SNE books and the JIS Project website, I've noticed that MYSTIC has also been adding AGS information. I've been thinking about starting culture categories for the big countries or countries with a lot of submitted details, like the JIS, the AGS, and UCAS (well, maybe not the UCAS, since most people visiting the SixthWorld already have a well enough understanding of the North American countries). Would this be wise to do so, or could it go out of hand?--YoungFreud 13:12, 9 Feb 2005 (Eastern Standard Time)

So far, it's looking okay. I don't think it's getting out of hand.

Sourcebook Information?[]

How about articles on the various Source/Rule/Adventure books? I'm not talking about reviews or divulging all their info, but simply listing information like Publishication date, edition, type, and what information is in the book. Ravenhull 15:11, 25 Feb 2006 (EST)

It might not be a bad idea to attempt to standardize the inclusion of sourcebook info in articles. You could place a small section at the bottom of an article, like 'References'. It'd certainly be handy to read something new about the setting, and then go find a book with more information.--Gray 04:10, 28 November 2006 (EST)

Earthdawn[]

Since the main page talk seems locked, I'll post here. Shadowrun and Earthdawn share the same world, and there are lot of common topics. At some point somebody may consider starting an Earthdawn Wiki, which would inevitably duplicate part of this wiki and force editors interested in both worlds to split their time between two sites... or we could expand the scope of this Wiki to include Earthdawn information. So far I heard no objections to the articles in Category:Earthdawn. What do you think?--Piotrus 10:46, 26 December 2006 (EST)

IMHO, it's a bad idea, for several reasons. Mostly, it's not the scope of this wiki, there are huge changes between the two worlds, and interwiki links exist if such a thing would be needed. —Jérémie Bouillon 19:33, 26 December 2006 (EST)
Earthdawn and Shadowrun share the same world -- thousands of years apart. While there is some crossover, the vast majority of resource material for each game has absolutely no relevancy to the other, and as such, I think they are incredibly ill-suited for sharing the same wiki. Since the SWW material is GNU FDL licensed, there is nothing stopping a Fourth World Wiki from borrowing relevant text. The only article in Category:Earthdawn that I see as being largely irrelevant to the Sixth World is Passions -- the rest are fine. --AdamJury 23:38, 26 December 2006 (EST)
I second that, External Link sections work well for this. --msde 19:09, 10 January 2007 (EST)

Interwiki/Interlanguage Linking?[]

Hello there, It's been a while since we folks from the German Shadowrun Wiki Shadowhelix last time raised our voice here, but alas, it's time again. We underwent quite some development since that last time and are constantly growing. Now, we recently started adding Interwiki/Interlanguage links as known from Wikipedia to our pages. These links direct users to this Wiki for English versions of articles [example]. Now I'm in the process of acquiring some kind of link partnerships with different language Wikis because I thought "Ah well, I may just help all of us". So, my question is: Would you be willing to add the possibility for Interwiki/Interlanguage links to your Wiki? The setting of the links may be done by ourselves, we just need you to do the right settings. Who'd be the person to contact for this? Hoping for replies

--Cornix 06:11, 19 January 2007 (EST)

Hello Cornix! It's been quite a while. I remember using a bunch of shadowhelix pages to give us a start on a bunch of ours, and created 2 templates to help me out. I believe they are Template:shadowhelix and Template:shadowhelixlong. I would suggest joining the mailing list mentioned on the main page, http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/sixthworldwiki/ and asking again there.
  1. All the links to the Polish Shadowrun Wiki are all completely dead.
  2. I also recommend to place a link to the German "Shadowhelix" on the Main Page. We have one to your English "Sixth World Wiki" there to.
  3. I well understand, that the Main Page is blocked (even for logged in users) but why the Main Page talk is blocked too?
    --Karel 02:07, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

The main page's talk was protected ages ago due to spam; I've unprotected it now. I'll link up the Shadowhelix shortly. --AdamJury 05:26, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

4th edition updates[]

I notice a lot of things that haven't been updated for 4th edition, for example in japan it still says that japan owns San Francisco, when california says they don't.

I think we need to be across the board on SR4. What do you guys think? --Grue 12:27, 7 April 2008 (EDT)

Captcha[]

The captcha only at the user's connection isn't better ? --Archaos 06:32, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

Old users are not spammers[]

I decided to come back after a year and edit more, but every edit I make - as a registered user in an account with dozens editions and created years ago - now brings up 'prove you are not a spammer' box. This is annoying, and I don't think I will keep editing if this keeps up :( --Piotrus 13:42, 22 September 2008 (EDT)

It's been awhile since I've investigated the CAPTCHA software; I'll see if it can be better-tuned. Initially I configured it to be very strict because the spam/vandalism problems were out of hand -- I was at the point where I had to either lock the SWW down hard or shut it down, basically. Now that we've established that the software can do a very good job of keeping the wiki clean, I'll see about dialing it back a bit to make things easier on the regular contributors. --AdamJury 15:41, 22 September 2008 (EDT)
Thank you. So far I am still seeing CAPTCHA. I will check periodically, and when I can edit again I will (sorry, but filling CAPTCHA after every edit is too annoying :( ). Update: still bad. --Piotrus 22:46, 22 September 2008 (EDT)
Sorry, but I didn't say I'd do it within a day -- my day job is exceptionally busy, with all our new games :). I hope to have time to look into this over the next couple days, but understand the situation: if I rush into this and accidentally dial the settings down too far initially, then not only will I have to fix things again ... but we'll have to clean up the spam that will almost certainly arrive immediately. --AdamJury 15:09, 23 September 2008 (EDT)
Oh, I now (and thank you for maintaining this page!). I know how a thankless a job of a wiki admin can be. When you think you've fixed it, can you leave a message on my talkpage? Thank you! --Piotrus 01:02, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
PS. The problem still persists, and if it affects everyone, I am sure it is driving many editors away. I am a member of quite a few wikis and this is the only one that has such a restrictive CAPTCHA... --Piotrus 11:35, 3 October 2008 (EDT)
I also don't like it very much, but befor the CAPTCHA for every edit was installed, this wiki saw amassed attacks by odd automated spam, which simply inserted nonsense/gibberish in random pages without any external links. - This is the reason, why you have to fill the CAPTCHA every time you try to safe an edit. - I know, its uncomfortable, but it's the only way to deal with the problem. --Karel 13:38, 3 October 2008 (EDT)
I have tweaked the CAPTCHA settings so registered users who are not adding external links are not subject to the CAPTCHA. Please keep a close eye out for spam/vandalism. :-) --AdamJury 14:41, 3 October 2008 (EDT)
Thanks :) --Piotrus 20:21, 5 October 2008 (EDT)

Table formatting[]

Does Dumpshock have a CSS class for tables along the lines class="wikitable" (from Wikipedia) ? If not what do people think about adding one? I can create a template that sort of does it, but a class would be easier to use, and promote uniform design.

I bring it up because I've always found clean CSS based tables to look much better than plain HTML tables. Compare:

Category cleanup[]

Done (Special:Uncategorizedpages, Special:Uncategorizedcategories are now empty). Mostly. There are three strange errors - pages that are categorized but show as uncategorized. Perhaps they should be deleted and recreated? They are: Category:Industries, Resources and Sentient Creatures.--Piotrus 15:57, 12 February 2009 (EST)

Adminship[]

Since we seem to have no active admin (Category:Pages for deletion is not cleansed, despite having articles there tagged for deletion for months) I'd like to apply for adminship. In addition to being active on 6thWW for years, I've am a Wikipedia admin with 4+ years of experience in that position :) --Piotrus 15:59, 12 February 2009 (EST)

Need a hand? it looks like there is work enough for both of us. I deleted 40 some odd pages tonight. All the spam is cluttering up the wiki.
