The area political recognized as Gansu is really a large number of mirco-states on the western Chinese border. Each is controlled by one warlord or an another, and they frequently change hands. The area is made of the outlying provinces of what was once western China; notably Gansu, Qinghai and some territory of Inner Mongolia. The only real political power one finds out here is the barely functional government of the capital, Lanzhou. The area is known as a frontier region and no man's land between Mongolia, Tibet, and the former Chinese states of Sichuan and Shaanxi.

HistoryEdit

After the break-up of the People's Republic of China, these mostly rural provinces which needed central government support fell into anarchy. With land grabs from local nations and bandits roaming with impunity, the local government collapsed leaving the individual communities on their own. Invaribly small militia arose out of the rural villages, which banded together and fought other militia, giving rise to the various warlords which now dominate this region.

Lack of governmental interference also ment that the megacorporations could work without constraint, so those areas which the metacorps sunk there teeth into almost immediately were striped of natural resources and heavily industrialized. The local urban centers needed to rely on the megacorps rather significant aid, to the point where they are basically puppets to their corporate backers.

PoliticsEdit

The regional capital at Lanzhou exists thanks to the backing of several corporations. Nucor, IFMU and Ruhrmetall all seek to insure that the New Silk Road transcontinental railway, the main artery for Europe-Asia trade which passes through the city, remains unmolested as well as harvesting Gansu's natural resources.

Arguably the most powerful warlord in the region is Major General Qao Hien Shin. A military commanderer for the former People's Republic of China, he was sent with a full battlion to quell the uprising of Tibet in 2011. He and his men were caught in the Maya Cloud as it descended to isolate Tibet. In 2052, the remains of the force exited the cloud to find their country gone, dissolved into warring nations, and they carved out a piece of southern Gansu, centered on the city of Haiyan, to rebuild and rearm. Shin has taken it upon himself to re-unite all of China under his power, with the first target being his old enemy, Tibet.

GeographyEdit

The ecology of Gansu is a study in contrasts. The southern and western portions of the region are heavily forested and are known to harbor a wide variety of paranatural flora and fauna. The northeast of the state is industrialized and hold a majority of the metahuman population. The developed areas all cluster around the New Silk Road, as going deeper incountry invaribly brings encounters with the local warlords.

EconomyEdit

The mutual need for the New Silk Road and Gansu's backwoods isolation keeps the megacorps from stepping on each other's toes to much, leaving an open field for smaller corps to grab some action. The commerce in this region focuses on heavy industry, oil refining, mining and nuclear reactor production. Some biotechnology companies are showing interest in both the exotic wildlife and their toxic counterparts found in the industrialized zones. There are always rumors of megacorps funding the private warlords, both nothing concrete yet.
